Out-of-State Learning Placements
What are out-of-state placements?
Out-of-state learning placements are hands-on learning experiences such as internships, clinical rotations, field experiences, or student teaching completed in a state other than where a student is enrolled or where the university is located.
These experiences are part of some academic programs and are designed to provide real-world professional training in the student’s field of study.
How placements work
Through participation in the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA), VCU may be able to place students in experiential learning activities in other participating states without obtaining additional institutional authorization, depending on the type, duration, and nature of the placement.
Placement requirements vary by program. Programs leading to professional licensure, such as nursing, education, and other regulated fields, may have additional requirements or restrictions based on state licensing board regulations.
Important considerations
Students should be aware that:
- Placement availability may vary by program and state.
- Some placements may require additional approvals based on professional licensure requirements.
- Programs will provide guidance regarding any applicable placement requirements before students participate.
Monitoring and Reporting
VCU monitors and documents out-of-state learning placements to support academic planning, regulatory compliance, and required reporting. This helps ensure that students are appropriately placed and supported throughout their academic programs.
As a SARA participating institution, VCU is required to report certain information about out-of-state learning placements annually, including the number of students participating in experiential learning activities by state and academic program area.
Questions
Students with questions about placement opportunities or requirements should contact their academic program or academic advisor.
